At-home vs. Professional Dermaplaning: What’s the Difference?

2025-08-27T08:34:35-04:00September 4, 2025|General|

At-home alternatives to spa treatments are becoming more and more popular so we wanted to do a little experiment on one of them: Dermaplaning.

For those who are not familiar with what this service consists of, dermaplaning is an exfoliation treatment that removes vellus hair (peach fuzz) and dead skin cells/debris buildup. A licensed provider applies oil to the face and takes a medical grade scalpel across the skin at a specific angle to ensure comfort and a smooth glide. Blades are replaced throughout treatment to minimize discomfort and reduce the risk of nicks or cuts. By removing the peach fuzz and superficial layer of skin, your face looks brighter, feels smoother, and improves skincare product penetration and makeup application.

Professional scalpel & plastic razor used in the experiment.

The tools available for at-home dermaplanes are very different than what is used in a professional . . .

Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be a key step in everyone’s daily skincare routine, no matter what time of year it is. While the sun is not as strong in the winter months and we may not be outside as much, the UV rays are still there and can penetrate our windows.

The sun’s UV rays damage skin cells, leading to sunburn, premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer. Finding a sunscreen may be overwhelming, as there seem to be endless options. Here is what you need to know:

Look for broad spectrum options. Broad spectrum protects against UVA & UVB rays. UVB rays are to blame for painful sunburns, aging, and skin cancer. UVA rays make up over 90% of all UV radiation and can penetrate clouds & glass all year along. These cause wrinkles and some skin cancer.

SPF, or sun protection factor, measures how well sunscreen . . .

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

2025-10-27T13:44:18-04:00May 13, 2025|General|

Manual lymphatic drainage is a manual technique rooted in the science of the anatomy and physiology of the body’s lymphatic system, which consists of a network of organs, vessels and tissues that move lymph fluid back to the circulatory system. Lymph fluid is extra fluid from cells and tissues in the body that contains proteins, minerals, fat, damaged or cancer cells and germs. It also transports white-blood cells. The lymphatic system is a vital part of the immune system, with various roles to protect the body from infection & keep other systems within the body functioning appropriately. A congested or disrupted lymphatic system can compromise the immune system and/or cause lymph fluid to collect in certain areas, resulting in swelling.

During a lymphatic drainage massage, the massage therapist uses very light, precise manipulations to specific areas of the body, stretching the skin in the direction they want the lymph to move. . . .

DMK Enzyme Therapy Treatments

2025-10-27T13:44:19-04:00May 13, 2025|General|

Most cosmetic facial treatments work topically on the surface of the skin, which are beneficial, however what is visible on the surface is directly related to something going on underneath the skin. The most effective way to improve imperfections on the skin’s surface is to correct the underlying issue(s), occurring at the cellular level. DMK’s botanical based, pharmaceutical grade formulations work with the internal structures and functions of the skin to restore homeostasis.

SCG Spa offers DMK Enzyme Therapy Treatments, Levels 1-3. All three levels consist of cleansing, masking, removing the mask and finishing products. DMK’s unique firm setting enzyme mask works with the circulatory system, bringing freshly oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood to the skin cells. This initiates lymphatic drainage and reverse osmosis, or backflushing, in and around the cells and capillaries. After application, the mask sets for 45 minutes and firms up to the point where many clients feel the pulsing . . .
