“What is a unit of tox? How many units will I need?”
We get these questions a lot, but it is not a simple answer.
Just like weight is measured in pounds and medicine is measured in milligrams, “units” are how tox (Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®) is measured for use. “Units” of tox refer to a standard measure of biologic strength, so unlike pounds and milligrams, “units” are not easily determined by reading a number or finding a marking on a syringe – unless you know what you are looking for.
When you open a new box of tox, it is in solid form. Each vial contains tiny crystals that are mixed with saline when its ready for use. This process is called dilution. The dilution rate determines how concentrated a unit of tox is and are set by the FDA & tox manufacturers. Dilution is super important because it controls the strength, spread, safety, and client satisfaction. There are currently 5 FDA approved injectable neurotoxins available for use in the US. While they share the same active ingredient, the manufacturing process, protein size, stabilizers, and unit measurements all vary.

So when we’re asked “how many units of tox will I need?”, there are many factors that go into an answer. A consultation is the best way to get a clear picture of how many units you will need so we can determine the level of movement you have, what your goals are, and which neurotoxin would be best for you. Each tox differs in terms of their formulations, potencies, therefore, affecting the way they work in the body, and cost. Any tox treatment is not a one-size-fits-all and should be customized to your facial anatomy to achieve your desired results.
