While the word “acid” may seem scary, Hyaluronic Acid is a low risk and important addition to any skincare routine. HA is naturally occurring in our body’s connective tissues and is the main component of what gives our skin structure. Many of us hear a lot of talk about collagen, which has a key role for our skin, but HA is primarily responsible for our skin’s plump, hydrated appearance.

Without getting too deep into science, HA works by holding water molecules on the skin’s surface, keeping it nice and hydrated. It can bind up to 1000xs its weight in water! Well moisturized skin = lots of water content. HA prevents transepidermal water loss, or how much water is evaporated from the skin, making it a very effective hydrator.

Because our bodies produce HA naturally, there is a low risk of allergic reactions. Just make sure you’re purchasing from a reputable source and do your research, as not all HA is equal. Too high of concentrations can cause irritation, so stay away from anything above 2%.

If your HA is a serum, use after cleansing, exfoliation or toners and follow with a moisturizer. We love Theraderm’s OPC serum. DMK’s Super Bright would be used between a serum & moisturizer. If you have a moisturizer with HA, this will always be the last step of your skincare routine before applying an SPF. Theraderm’s Eternox & Peptide Hydrator are great options. DMK’s Eye Tone is great specifically for the eye area.

It is important to remember one ingredient or product will not reverse the signs or process of aging. However, with the right combination of skincare products for your skin’s needs and goals, and some professional skincare treatments, you might be surprised how often someone asks to check your ID!
